starch, soluble fiber and fiber. She noted that we analyze feeds for these
compounds for diet formulation, using the amount of each in conjunction with
its unique digestion and fermentation characteristics to optimize rumen
fermentation and animal performance. The difficulty lies in that there are a
multitude of sugars and various molecular combinations of these sugars that
make up starch, soluble fiber and fiber. The variety of molecular structures
and chemical properties makes it difficult to isolate and quantify these
carbohydrates.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Hence the <span

is this time of the year where rumors of a possible drought in the <st1:pla=

roof. So, Mother Nature sends the requested rain and rumors emerge about a
bumper crop. Prices collapse. One can quickly lose his/her sanity over these
price gyrations. Fortunately, you are feeding dairy cows. They don't NEED c=
orn
or soybeans to produce milk. They need NUTRIENTS, such as energy (measured =
as
Net Energy for Lactation - NEL), rumen degradable protein (RDP),
digestible rumen <span class=3DSpellE>undegradable</span> protein (d-RUP),
effective neutral detergent fiber (e-NDF), and non-effective NDF (ne-NDF).
Although corn and soybean meal can be important suppliers of nutrients, oth=
er
combinations of feedstuffs can achieve the same results. Corn and soybean m=
eal
are also important market drivers of feed commodities, but other commoditie=
s,
especially high fiber by-products, have markets and seasonal patterns of th=

own. Thus, if soybean meal goes up by 10%, you should NOT think that the pr=
ice
of protein has gone up by 10%. If you are feeding a lot of soybean meal and=
 its
price goes up by 10%, then it is time to look at your nutrition program and
consider other combinations of feed ingredients. You should also consider k=
nown
seasonal trends. We know that people drink more beer in summer time. Thus, =
more
beer is brewed. Therefore, the supply of brewers grains increases. The good=
 old
law of supply and demand works, and the price of brewers grains falls.
Likewise, winter wheat is harvested in early summer. And guess what, some
people are milling this wheat! Thus, the supply of wheat <span class=3DSpel=
lE>middlings</span>
(often shortened to wheat <span class=3DSpellE>midds</span>) increases, whi=
le the
demand by the feed industry to manufacture <span class=3DSpellE>pelleted</s=

feeds drops. The same law of supply and demand works again; the price of wh=
eat <span
class=3DSpellE>midds</span> falls. I received a call last week from an old =

<h2>WHAT&#8217;S HAPPENING ON THE FARM</h2>

<p class=3DMsoBodyText2>Our silage bagger finally bit the dust. It didn&#82=
17;t
owe us anything since we bought it used about 20 years ago. We&#8217;ll
probably buy another bagger (preferably used-but-not-abused) since we find a
bagger useful for those small lots of forage that we don&#8217;t have room =
for
in our bunker silos. Silage bags are also good for those forages that, given
their questionable quality, we don&#8217;t want to put into our bunker silo=
s.
Such was the case this summer, when we found ourselves with about 100 tons =
of
weedy alfalfa-grass seeding. Since these were alfalfa-grass <span class=3DS=
pellE>seedings</span>
we were very limited what we could use in the way of herbicides. We have a =
very
good stand of alfalfa in these fields, but had too many broadleaf weeds (mo=
stly
<span class=3DSpellE>lambsquarters</span> and mustard) so we considered it
&#8220;heifer feed&#8221; Not that our heifers deserve poor quality forage,=
 but
the resulting combination of pretty good alfalfa and not-so-good weeds shou=
ld
be OK for this purpose. The forage analyses on this forage are actually pre=
tty
good&#8212;16.5% crude protein, 33% ADF, 48% NDF. It&#8217;s easy to
overestimate the amount of weeds in a weedy alfalfa seeding. We did a botan=

composition from one field and it was bout 80% alfalfa, 10% grass and only =
10%
broadleaf weeds.</p>
