about ADF digestibility and how it compares to NDF digestibility. It’s
long been accepted that ADF is a good indicator of plant maturity and energy
value of a forage. Acid detergent fiber has long been considered to be inve=

related to the energy content of a feed. The greater the ADF value, the low=
er
the energy value. Many predictive energy equations are based on ADF; for
instance, net energy of lactation (NEl). But what about the digestibility of
ADF itself? Given its inverse relationship with energy value, one might thi=

that ADF is relatively indigestible or much more slowly digested compared to
NDF.

ADF, NDF and in vitro analyses begin with a separate sub-sample of f=

resulting residue through all of the analyses. For instance, to determine A=
DF
sequentially, we run the forage sub-sample through the NDF procedure, calcu=

NDF, and then run that NDF residue through the ADF method. For ADFd we incu=

the sub-sample in vitro, then run NDF to determine NDFd, then take t=

produced indicate P levels of about 0.80% of dry matter or less. That is
certainly higher than corn grain (~0.30%), but what does it mean for total

for P content of alfalfa and corn silage, soybean meal and corn grain, plus=
a
value of 0.80% P for DG, I used CPM-Dairy to estimate the expected P conten=

the manure. For cows fed a conventional diet of 50% forage (1:1 alfalfa and
corn silages) plus 50% grain (corn, soybean meal, min/vit) the dietary P co=

manure-P was 44 grams/day. That is only 7 grams per day more P output per c=

I believe that for many producers this slightly greater P output in the man=

One involves soil pests other than seed insects and rootworms, particularly
nematodes. Insecticide pretreatments aren’t labeled for nematode cont=
rol,
and rootworm resistant hybrids won’t control them either. Most soil
insecticides aren’t labeled for nematode control (Counter is an
exception). We don’t know how serious nematodes are in <st1:place w:s=
t=3D"on">Northeastern
U.S.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> corn fields=

most farmers aren’t using anything to control them anyway. (What few =
corn
field nematode analyses we have done found potentially damaging levels of
nematodes.) With nematodes the exception, hybrids with both the corn borer =
and
rootworm resistant traits control a lot of bugs: Both YieldGard Plus and
Herculex Extra are labeled for rootworms, corn borers, cutworms, armyworms,
wireworms, white grubs, seed corn maggots, earworms, and early flea beetle.=

there’s insect resistance: Soil insecticides have been used in corn
production since the 1950s with no reports of insecticide-resistant corn
rootworms. That’s because a soil insecticide only kills some of the
rootworm larvae. It kills the larvae feeding close to the row, while roots =
near
the center of the rows are too far from the insecticide band and rootworm
larvae can chow down. That’s not what happens with
rootworm-resistant corn, and it’s why in university trials the root
