Note the date when your silage silked, count ah=

six weeks and that’s about when you should get serious about checking
maturity status. Most of the difference between hybrids of different relati=

t from
silking to the 32-35% dry matter that’s i=

for corn silage. You might have read somewhere that corn will reach
“silage maturity” 35-45 days after silking=

but usually that’s 30% DM and we much prefer waiting until the corn i=

few percentage points further along than that.

haven’t already done so, now would be a good time to plan where you&#=
8217;ll
put what for many farmers in Northeastern NY and New England is looking lik=
e a
bumper corn crop. Many corn silage silos will be empty or nearly so by
September, but this could be the biggest crop in many years and you don&#82=
17;t
want to run out of silo room with a lot of acres still standing. Selling the
excess crop for grain is a possibility for some, but custom combine operato=
rs
don’t get excited about moving their equipment onto your farm for 20
acres or so unless they’re already next door. This may be the perfect
year to consider high chopping—leaving 12 to 18” of stubble rat=
her
than the normal 6-8”. Shelled corn prices will be high and with many
farmers increasing the distillers grain in their rations, starch will be at=
a
premium. An easy way to increase the energy in corn silage is to increase c=
hop
height. There will only be a modest increase in digestibility and of course
you’ll lose a ton or so of yield per acre, but there’ll be more
grain in every mouthful. Any production response should be positive; <st1:p=

feed efficiency also increased. It should go without saying (but we’l=

explained the lack of effect of floor type. They concluded that cows prefer=

of research on this subject here at the Institute a few years ago. We found=
PM
mowed alfalfa-grass to have significantly higher sugar than alfalfa-grass in
the same field mowed in the AM. However, what’s important isn’t=
just
when you mow, but how long the forage has to sit in the field (losing sugar=

the process) between mowing and chopping. With good windrow management we c=

mow in the morning and chop in the afternoon. However, try as we might, alf=
alfa
mowed in the afternoon just wasn’t ready to chop that evening, and it
wasn’t until late the following morning that it reached about 35% DM.=
By
that time the alfalfa had the same sugar content as the AM-mowed alfalfa did
when we chopped it. As expected, we didn’t find any differences in
fermentation or silage quality between AM and PM mowed alfalfa-grass. =

to build in plants throughout a sunny day. You won’t be able to chop =
that
day anyway and the plants will lose sugars all night long, so at least try =
to
start with as much sugar as possible. Probably the worst thing to do would =
be
to mow early in the afternoon before sugars are maxed out, then not be able=

would be early enough in the morning to permit ensiling that same <span

PM-mowed alfalfa harvested for silage, and they mowed at 6:00 PM.</o:p=

That’s right: Soil pH had to be kept low to avoid potato scab, but the
cost of low pH was high: Lots of fertilizer to counteract very high levels =
