producers are hesitant to create multiple groups on their farm because they
fear a more prolonged loss of milk when cows are regrouped? Despite the
research, there is no doubt that milk loss can be substantial and prolonged
following regrouping on commercial dairy farms. Why do on-farm results
sometimes differ from carefully controlled studies with small numbers of co=

pen size, time spent outside the pen, and the effect on time budget behavio=

20

may lose milk yield for prolonged periods of time when moved from one group=
 to
another on-farm. A perceptive nutritionist in the audience wondered whether=
 a
substantial part of the answer might be the stocking density of the pen that
the cow(s) is moved into versus the stocking density of its current pen. On
many farms, the later lactation, lower producing cow pens have the highest
stocking density. So, if a cow is moved from the high or medium group into a
low pen, she may well experience a different diet, but additionally she may
also experience higher stocking density. So, the greater competition she
experience amplifies and prolongs the negative effects of regrouping on her
behavior and productivity. We agreed that it is certainly an idea worth more
investigation. We hope to study this issue in the coming months on a range =

discussing amino acid nutrition. What does this mean? The first limiting am=

The agreement of cows identified as lame vs. not lame between the 2 scoring
