Soil Science

Soil Science integrates physical, geological, chemical and biological perspectives of the soil with the ultimate goal of understanding soils as biogeochemical systems. Students learn the basics of soil formation and description, soil organisms, nutrient cycling, soil acidity and non-point source pollution. The laboratory begins with a study of undisturbed forest soils and then emphasizes an original scientific investigation of linkages between soil management and surface water pollution in agricultural systems using the field and laboratory resources of Miner Institute. This year's class is studying the dynamics of macropore flow in tile-drain systems.
